Sunrise Muse

28 January 2005

President Jane allowed a grace period for our habitually tardy membership. It really was bad weather delay. Mike lead off with the pledge and Barry delivered the invocation. Bob welcomed our visiting Rotarians and managed to mispronounce everyone’s last name.

Today’s meeting was dominated by club business “The Annual All Seniors High School” event and a COG meeting.

The All Seniors High School event is sponsored in conjunction with the Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club. The event is scheduled for 26 May 2005 at the San Mateo Marriott. Donations are required to help offset the cost of the event. So get those donation request letters out Now!!

The event sponsorship started with the four high schools in the district. And now has expanded to all of the high schools in San Mateo School district. And this year there will be 105 award recipients. We need supplies for the 105 college “survival kits” and sponsors for the banquet. Our club members need to participate in the awards event to show our support and introduce attendees to Rotary International as a place to belong and be of service to others.

Ms. Diana Whitecar was recognized as this year’s chairperson. Event committee members are Mike Wong, Lola Thompson, Tyrone Robinson, Art LaBrie, Skip Dahl and Jennifer Points.

See any of these folks for sponsorship opportunities pamphlet or donor solicitation letters and envelops.

President Jane started the COG meeting by reminding the attendees that this was required by all the new members as a step to earning their Blue badge.

Skip presented the club structure which consists of a club governing Board of Directors. The board is composed of 9 members; 5 club officers and 4 directors. They meet monthly to review the status of the club and the goals set for the year. San Mateo Sunrise Rotary also has a separate non profit foundation that is locally focused, funded and managed. The foundation is a tax deductible charity and governed by a separate Board of Directors consisting of 4 club past presidents. They administer the funds and award various scholarships.

Club members are recognized as either regular (Blue) or new (Red) by their badge color. To achieve a regular member Blue badge a new member must comply with the following:

Attend meetings regularly

Collect a business card from each member if a small club or 10% of the membership if a large club

Attend a Board Meeting

Visit another Rotary club

Attend a COG meeting
